How to Help Struggling Readers
– 9 Steps for Parents
Is your child a struggling reader? Not to worry! Almost half of all kids will struggle with reading, so you’re definitely not alone.
You may be wondering how best to help your child gain more confidence with reading. Think of Red Cat Reading as a reading assistant. Keep reading to find out more…

Some of the reasons kids may be struggling to read are:
- Reading at the wrong level
- No interest in reading
- Reading about subjects which don’t interest them
- No time for reading
- Not enough one-on-one time in class
- Parents don’t actively encourage reading
- Reading disability
How can you break down all these barriers and help your struggling reader? Just follow our 9-step plan and your child will start setting the foundations for a lifelong love of reading.
Strategies for Struggling Readers to Become Successful Readers:
- Talk to your child’s teacher to see if they have any suggestions to help with your child’s reading difficulty. Work together to help your child at school and at home.
- Evaluate your child’s reading level quickly and easily with our Guided Reading – Level Assessment book:
- Make sure your child starts reading at their correct level (don’t worry if this is lower than their peers). Our guided reading books will take your child by the hand and help them read step-by-step.
- Help your child choose book topics they’re interested in – they’ll be much more motivated to read!
- Read these books with your child for 15-30 minutes a day. Read them aloud with your child or use our ‘read aloud’ audio buttons on each page
- Praise every small success – your child will benefit from the added confidence and emotional support
- Practice with our reading comprehension worksheets and quizzes at www.redcatreading.com. You’ll be able to keep track of your child’s progress with reading every step of the way. They can even earn certificates and badges!
- Use our reading videos and funny kids songs for extra reading practice. If they’re having fun, they’ll learn to read faster and easier!
- You’re almost there! Repeat from Step 2 every time your child goes up to a new reading level. Now you can teach reading!
